How to claim a Kerala lottery prize

Won something in a Kerala State Lottery draw? Congratulations. Here is exactly what to do next — where to go for each prize amount, which documents to carry, what gets deducted, and the deadline you must not miss. The process is straightforward, but a lost or damaged ticket cannot be replaced, so read the first two steps before anything else.

Step 1 — Verify your ticket properly

Before planning anything, confirm the win against the official result gazette published by the Directorate of Kerala State Lotteries — not just a website, including this one. We transcribe results carefully from the official PDF, but the printed gazette is the only legal authority. Check the draw date, the lottery name, your full ticket number including the series letters, and the prize tier. Remember: the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes and the consolation prize are won only by the exact full ticket (series + number), while the lower tiers (4th–9th) are decided by the last four digits of your ticket, in any series.

Official lottery tickets carry a barcode. Agents and district offices verify tickets with the department's barcode scanner, which is also your protection against printing errors and fakes.

Step 2 — Sign and protect the ticket

Write your name and sign on the back of the winning ticket immediately. A lottery ticket is a bearer instrument — whoever holds it can claim it — so the signature ties it to you. Do not laminate it, fold it through the number, or let it fade; keep it dry and photograph both sides as a backup record (the photo is not a substitute for the ticket).

Step 3 — Where to claim, by prize amount

Prizes up to ₹5,000

The simplest case: any authorised Kerala lottery agent or seller can pay you out on the spot against the winning ticket, or you can collect from the District Lottery Office. Most winners of the lower tiers never need to deal with any paperwork beyond handing over the ticket.

Prizes above ₹5,000

Larger prizes must be claimed formally. Surrender the original winning ticket together with a filled claim form and the documents below at a bank, the District Lottery Office of any of Kerala's 14 districts, or the Directorate of Kerala State Lotteries at Vikas Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram. Very large prizes (including the jackpot) are processed through the Directorate, and payment is made to your bank account after verification of the ticket against the department's records.

Step 4 — Documents to carry

• The original winning ticket, signed on the back (no photocopies).
• The prize claim form, available at district offices and the Directorate.
• A government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, driving licence…).
• PAN card copy — required for tax deduction on larger prizes.
• Two passport-size photographs, attested as required on the form.
• Bank account details (a cancelled cheque or passbook copy) for the payout.

Step 5 — Know what gets deducted

Lottery winnings in India attract income tax (TDS) of about 30%, plus applicable surcharge and cess, deducted before the prize is paid. In addition, an agent commission of roughly 10% applies to prize payouts. So a ₹1 crore jackpot does not arrive as ₹1 crore in your account — plan around the post-deduction figure. Rates are set by the Government and can change; the office processing your claim will give you the exact calculation.

Step 6 — Mind the deadline

⏱️ Claims should generally be submitted within 30 days of the draw date. Unclaimed prizes lapse to the government. If you are close to the deadline, go to the nearest District Lottery Office rather than posting anything.
